2020 NFL Draft: Receivers dominate end-of-season mock draft
Regardless of the future of Philip Rivers, the time to move on draws near for the Chargers. With the trophy case of Dan Marino and not near the inflated production value, Rivers has worn into an expendable piece of an otherwise talented Chargers roster. Staring an Eli Manning-esque situation in the face, a mutual parting of ways could lie ahead for the Bolts.
Enter Justin Herbert, who is firmly locked in as the number three quarterback in the class in most rankings until Tagovailoa’s decision is made. Herbert hasn’t shown the killer instinct that scouts hoped to see in the late stages of the season. However, the arm talent and awareness for the position is present. Los Angeles may opt to sit Herbert behind Tyrod Taylor for a short while in 2020 to help acclimate him to the NFL.
The option to trade back remains for the Chargers. With names like Jacob Eason, Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love available later, LA could stand to build collateral to aid whoever takes the snaps in powder blue next season.
A healthy Cam Newton is better than any of the quarterbacks available in this situation. Whether or not Newton returns to Carolina is another matter, though the expectation remains he will return, unlike Rivers. That affords the opportunity to draft Auburn’s Derrick Brown.
Brown is a monster on the interior of the front that will swallow blockers for linebackers Shaq Thompson and Luke Kuechly in the run game. In the passing game, his push down the throat of the pocket will allow pass rushers Mario Addison and Brian Burns to feast on opposing quarterbacks. It’s a match made in defensive heaven, and hellish offensive nightmares.
