The Dallas Cowboys are expected to take a safety or defensive tackle in the 2020 NFL Draft, but Brent Sobleski says there’s a receiver to keep an eye on

As the 2020 NFL Draft comes closer, there are some teams with glaring needs that make their potential targets stand out. One such team is the Dallas Cowboys, who need a new starting safety in the worst possible way.

And even if the top safeties were off the board, Dallas still looks like a predictable team. They’re in a position where they could also use a game-changing defensive tackle as both safety and D-tackle were ignored by the previous regime.

However, Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report has another option for the Cowboys — wide receiver. In a recent article, Sobleski says the team could target a surprise player in Alabama’s Henry Ruggs. There is a caveat though as Sobleski sees this happening only if they fail to re-sign their current No. 1 wideout, Amari Cooper.

"“Henry Ruggs III is a blazing-fast option to pair with Michael Gallup. It wouldn’t be ideal, but the Cowboys placed themselves in this position by not signing Cooper to an extension yet.” — Sobleski, Bleacher Report"

Clearly with the way Amari Cooper has played since joining the Cowboys, it would be better for them to retain No. 19. But Ruggs wouldn’t be the worst fall-back plan, especially given the way Michael Gallup broke out in 2019.

In 13 games, Gallup had 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. He also stepped up his game down the stretch while Cooper was struggling.

Ruggs as a compliment to Gallup would give Dallas two great deep threats. Gallup was good for nearly 17-yards per reception in 2019 and Ruggs is expected to blow scouts away with his speed once he runs the 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine.

He was overshadowed by Jerry Jeudy, but Ruggs was still the Tide’s fastest wideout and had nearly 19-yards per grab last season.
