Round 5, Pick 138: Essang Bassey, CB, Wake Forest

The 49ers sent their second-round pick to the Chiefs in the Dee Ford trade as well as a third and fourth-round pick in the trade for Emmanuel Sanders. They’re more than satisfied with each of those moves but in order to make this long wait in the draft worth it, they have to re-sign Sanders.

Assuming that happens, they are now on the clock again and can turn their attention to cornerback where they land Essang Bassey from Wake Forest. He struggled some in the Senior Bowl which hurts his stock but Bassey was a solid defender at Wake Forest with great ball skills.

He won’t be asked to start anytime soon in San Francisco, but he does have some talented veterans to learn from as he hopes to develop into a contributor.

Round 5, Pick158: Antoine Brooks, Jr., S, Maryland

Another free agent the 49ers hope to keep is Jimmie Ward, their starting free safety. Clearly, they will want to do that, but even with him locked up, they can use some depth. That’s where Antoine Brooks, Jr. from Maryland comes in.

The 213-pound Terp is a good tackler who projects as a strong safety at the next level. He isn’t going to offer much in deep coverage but he can be helpful closer to the line of scrimmage. Could be another developmental player that turns out to be a good find late in this draft.
