On the heels of the 2020 NFL Draft, Utah Utes’ cornerback Jaylon Johnson is set to undergo shoulder surgery, his third one.
In a deep cornerback class, a potential day-two pick in the 2020 NFL Draft is headed for a bit of a setback. Utah star cornerback Jaylon Johnson is set to undergo a shoulder procedure as he begins his professional career and heads deeper into the pre-draft process.
According to Rotoworld, this will be Johnson’s third surgery on the shoulder, a major red flag for professional teams in the NFL. His setback is expected to be about five months, putting him on schedule to be ready to roll around the time the preseason begins this season.
Johnson was named as a second-team all-American this season with the Utes, and was in discussion as a late first round pick. Do not expect Johnson to fall out of the first three rounds of the draft, but his stock will take a hit with this news, especially it being a third surgery.
The senior cornerback finished his senior campaign with the Utes with 34 solo tackles, one tackle for loss, and two interceptions; he knocked down 11 passes additionally, and scored one defensive touchdown. A three-year starter in Salt Lake City, Johnson capped off his career with a total number of 88 solo tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, seven interceptions, two touchdowns, and 21 passes defended.
Listed at 6-0 and 195 pounds, Johnson has the size and physicality to become a solid, physical cornerback at the next level. However, the question must be asked: can his body continue to take the beating?
