Which of remaining 2020 NFL Draft QBs can claim title of QB5?
Similar to Jacob Eason, his 2019 Apple Cup counterpart Anthony Gordon entices the NFL with his natural throwing ability, but scares the NFL away with his lack of overall fundamentals. His arm is a weapon. What he lacks is the mental ability of an NFL quarterback. Playing in Mike Leach’s air raid system, Gordon has been playing in the opposite of a pro style system. Gordon would need to learn how to actually go through progressions and hit targets that are not wide open.
Anthony Gordon’s weaknesses stem from his time under Mike Leach at Washington state. The aspect of Gordon’s game that needs to be refined the most is his footwork. Gordon generally has a clean pocket playing in the PAC-12 and does not have to make many decisions about where to go with the ball. The air raid does not have a good track record of producing high level NFL quarterbacks.
What gives Anthony Gordon a shot at being the “best of the rest” in the case of 2020 NFL draft quarterbacks, is his natural throwing ability. While he does not possess the ability to contribute right away, Gordon gives an NFL team the opportunity to develop him for multiple years behind a starter. With a good offensive staff that can rework Gordon’s deficiencies, he can be just as successful as any quarterback in this class.
