The Browns have been linked to star pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, but even if it does happen, a signing should not affect the team’s 2020 NFL Draft

2014 number one overall pick EDGE Jadeveon Clowney was hoping to cash in this offseason, reportedly seeking a long-term deal worth at least $20 million per year. But nearly a month after free agency opened, Clowney remains unsigned. He is now rumored to be willing to accept a short-term deal in an effort to rebuild his value and earn the long-term contract he’s been looking for. With the 2020 NFL Draft right around the corner, is his landing spot becoming clearer, and could the Browns be involved?

Clowney has been linked to two teams most recently; the Tennessee Titans and the Browns. It seems unlikely that he’ll end up in Cleveland, but stranger things have happened. If Clowney does end up playing in brown and orange, he would be an upgrade over Olivier Vernon (although by how much remains to be seen), but he should not change how the team is approaching the defensive line in the Draft.

The contract length and amount is of course the main issue, but the Browns do make quite a bit of sense for Clowney on a short deal. The Titans would likely give Clowney a better chance at a Super Bowl this season (no championship hype for Cleveland this year), but in terms of setting himself up for a pay-day, Clowney’s best fit may be with the Browns.
