The “WTFP” staff has done a staff mock draft with writers making picks for certain teams. Here are the picks made for the Atlanta Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons appear to be in NFL purgatory. They have been a middling team since their super bowl 51 collapse. Not losing enough games to secure high draft picks while not winning enough games to be serious contenders has made the direction of the Falcons very unclear. The construction of the roster makes it very hard to undergo a full rebuild.

Head coach Dan Quinn was on the hot seat for much of the 2019 season. With the team playing considerably better down the stretch, Quinn bought himself another year. Had Atlanta continued to spiral, they would have had the opportunity to draft a franchise altering defensive player like Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young or Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons.

The truth of the matter is; Atlanta could not go into a rebuild with the way their contracts are currently structured. A rebuild would entail selling off players like Matt Ryan and Julio Jones off for as much draft capital as possible and building through the draft. The dead cap numbers on those contracts make it nearly impossible to do so. The silver lining for Atlanta? They have players like Matt Ryan and Julio Jones, along with a very solid supporting cast, meaning that getting the team back to contending status won’t be very hard.

The Falcons will pick six times in the 2020 NFL draft. With the limited amount of cap space they were able to use this off-season, general manager Thomas Dimitroff will be looking to provide premium talent to the defense. The offense appears to be essentially set, with very few holes if any. With Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, and a solid bunch of weapons, there is no shortage of of offensive firepower in Atlanta.
