The Colts take an offensive lineman in the first three rounds.

Most people look at the draft as a way to add talent and address weaknesses on the roster. Another strategy for teams, however, is to add even more talent to a strength. To make a strength stronger if you will. An example of this in recent drafts is San Francisco just last year when they took Nick Bosa despite already having Dee Ford, DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, and Solomon Thomas along the defensive line.

Chris Ballard has made it clear how important he thinks the trenches are to a winning team. He quickly turned one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL into one of the best. The group of Anthony Costanzo, Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly, and Braden Smith are not going anywhere. However, the right guard position currently filled by Mark Glowinski is considered basically the only weak spot along the front line. There are multiple players that the Colts could see as clear talent upgrades over Glowinski in the second and third rounds. Players like Robert Hunt, Netane Muti, Jonah Jackson, and Damien Lewis are all powerful guards that would fit in well with the rest of the offensive line.

Given his affinity for the trenches and the talent available at the position, don’t be surprised if Ballard takes an offensive guard prior to addressing other positions considered bigger needs.
