Browns: WTFP 2020 NFL Draft 3-round staff mock picks and explanations
By Sam Penix
With the departures of Joe Schobert and Christian Kirksey, the Browns have a huge hole at LB. Mack Wilson did not play well at all as a rookie. Sione Takitaki has potential but didn’t play much on defense. New signing B.J. Goodson is a solid run defender but will come off the field on passing downs. The teams needs a three-down player who can stop the run and cover well.
Enter Logan Wilson. The redshirt senior will turn 24 this year, but his advanced age isn’t as big a problem here in the third round, and when considering that this front office likely views LB as a one-contract position, given the low importance they’ve clearly placed on the spot.
Wilson is an ideal replacement for Schobert. At 6’2″ 240lb he has good size for a MIKE backer, and tested better than expected at the Combine, showing he should have no athletic limitations. He may not be the fastest or rangiest player, but he’s smart, consistent, and has a good feel for coverage as he was a cornerback in high school. He had 90+ tackles in each of his four seasons, and picked off 10 total passes.
He isn’t the fastest or rangiest player, so he may not have a super high ceiling. But his skillset translates well as a modern NFL LB, and he is exactly what the Browns need at the position.
