New Browns GM Andrew Berry was finally on the clock during the 2020 NFL Draft, and addressed a big need as he takes Jedrick Wills
After some interesting developments in the first nine picks, the Cleveland Browns selected Jedrick Wills 10th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, adding some much needed talent to the position.
Andrew Berry needed to get on base with his first draft pick as Browns general manager, as while former GM John Dorsey added some premier talent to the roster, there are still significant holes that need to be filled as the team enters the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Browns certainly don’t have the best draft history, but the team’s 2017 and 2018 classes have at least produced some franchise cornerstones including Myles Garrett, Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward. Berry, armed with four picks in the first three rounds, hopes to add to that list.
Berry seems to have the full support of owner Jimmy Haslam, so he should get a few years to make his mark on the team. But it’s impossible to predict the future in Cleveland; following the 2018 campaign and the 2019 offseason in which he added players like Sheldon Richardson, Odell Beckham Jr., and Greedy Williams, Dorsey looked invincible, but was out of a job less than a year later.
Berry was with the Browns as vice president of player personnel from 2016 to 2018, working under Dorsey for a year after two under Sashi Brown, now with the NBA’s Washington Wizards. Berry left to work for the Philadelphia Eagles before being hired as Browns GM this year. Many fans aren’t thrilled with the idea of returning to an analytics-based approach, but Berry has a strong football background, and perhaps selections like that of Wills will pay off in the long run.
