Loser: Trevor Lawrence

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has had the worst off-season out of anyone in the NFL, and he’s not even in it yet. All of the favorable potential destinations for Lawrence now look extremely unlikely. Lawrence is the consensus number one overall pick in 2021, as he has been excellent from the moment he stepped on the field at Clemson.

As of right now, the two most likely destinations for the Clemson standout are the Washington Redskins and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Washington is giving 2019 first round pick Dwayne Haskins a full year as the starter, and if they are picking in the top three again, they will be looking towards Lawrence or Ohio State standout Justin Fields.

Jacksonville remains as the most likely team to land Lawrence next year. The Jaguars, similar to the Redskins, will give their average 2019 rookie, Gardner Minshew, 2020 as a trial year. For 2021, the Jaguars already have an extra first round pick. Additionally, they still have Leonard Fournette and Yannick Ngakoue on the roster, who can help net them extra capital in 2021. They may already have a bad enough roster to pick first, but they are taking no chances.

The favorable destinations for Lawrence have already addressed their quarterback position, or have limited draft capital to move up in 2021. The Miami Dolphins, who are garnering media attention for all their draft capital and exceeded expectations in 2019, drafted Tua Tagovailoa. The Los Angeles Chargers, a team that has a stacked roster and stable front office, took Justin Herbert.

In Las Vegas, the Raiders decided to make their picks instead of trading back, now have only one first round pick for the first time since 2018. Las Vegas would have been great for Lawrence, due to their offensive minded coach, excellent offensive line, and new stadium and city. The New England Patriots traded out of the first round, and did not recoup any capital for next year.
