Where Newman Wins

The first element of Jamie Newman’s game that is glaringly obvious is his immense arm talent. For Georgia fans who have sat through Jake Fromm for the past three seasons are going to see a sharp increase in how the ball comes out of their quarterback’s hand. Pairing his arm talent with Todd Monken’s air raid philosophy will allow for Newman to put his talents on full display, especially given the significant increase in talent around him.

The former Wake Forest quarterback was born to play the position, and it is evidenced by his polished throwing mechanics and footwork as he scans the field for an open receiver. He throws a beautiful ball, and watching him do so is poetry in motion.

While Newman is mobile, another strength to his game, he also has tremendous poise in the pocket, and allows for the play in front of him to develop. With a precise internal timer, Newman knows when to hang around, and when to flee the pocket in order to extend the present play or take off and run.

With a high football IQ, the learning curve of adjusting to a new system and a new team could be flattened as Newman prepares to lead the Bulldogs back to the College Football Playoffs. Newman has multiple factors in his favor as he transitions to Athens, but also has a few areas of his game he must sharpen.
