As players from the 2017 NFL Draft are entering their fourth year, Myles Garrett is the only player in the top five to get his fifth-year picked up.

Myles Garrett was selected with the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, and as it turns out, he is the only one in the top-five who has worked out. As fifth-year options are rolling in from all 32 teams, Garrett is the only player in that range who has had their option picked up by their respective teams.

Mitchell Trubisky, Solomon Thomas, Leonard Fournette, and Corey Davis have all had their fifth-year options declined. In fact, only half of the players in the top ten have had their options picked up. Joining Garrett, Patrick Mahomes, Jamal Adams, and Mike Williams have all had theirs picked up, while Christian McCaffrey has already landed a long term extension.

John Ross was the fifth player in the top-ten to have his fifth-year option declined, as the Cincinnati Bengals decided to put him in a make-or-break situation. Since the fifth-year option was invented in 2013, this is the worst outcome of a draft class.

While this does not mean the end of these players’ times with the team that drafted them, they will hit the open market after the 2020 season. In the past, Blake Bortles has had his fifth year declined by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and still received an extension after leading them to the AFC Championship game in 2017.

At the time, the 2017 NFL Draft seemed like a hit-or-miss class outside of Myles Garrett, and three years later that has come to fruition. Will any of these five players in the top-ten breakout in 2020 and earn a big, new contract?
