The Broncos had quite the offseason, adding former Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon to their offense. Gordon will likely end up splitting snaps with undrafted phenom Phillip Lindsay, leaving Royce Freeman on the outside looking in.
Denver Broncos
Freeman, who was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, hasn’t really done enough to prove that he should be getting more snaps in the Broncos offense and could be on his way out of Denver if he can’t mesh well in new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s offensive scheme. Freeman has rushed for just over 1,000 yards in his two seasons in Denver and tallying 9 total touchdowns. Not exactly ideal numbers for a third-round pick.
If Freeman is sent packing before the season, Bellamy could be in contention for the third spot in the room. Bellamy had a decent 2018 season, tallying up 1,228 yards on 205 carries and 6 rushing touchdowns. He saw an explosion in offensive production in 2019, however, accounting for 1,527 scrimmage yards and 23 touchdowns, all of which were rushing touchdowns. While Bellamy is a bit undersized at 5’9″, Denver has shown that they can utilize undersized backs like Phillip Lindsay.
Bellamy’s familiarity with stretch concepts and inside zone run schemes could make him a perfect candidate to fight for that third running back spot. He will need to work on his production in the passing game, but he would likely be a more effective running back than Freeman or the now-Raider Devontae Booker.
