The one position that Denver didn’t address in the draft that many thought they would was the safety position. With Justin Simmons tagged and awaiting a new deal and Kareem Jackson in the driver’s seats as the starting safeties, the team clearly didn’t have the position high on the priority board. However, with Will Parks now in Philadelphia, the Broncos don’t have a safety that can play as a nickel package safety or a sub-linebacker.

While the team drafted Justin Strnad, the rangy linebacker out of Wake Forest, Denver still needs more depth at the safety position. Douglas Coleman III could be their guy to fit into the rotation. Coleman, a converted cornerback, has not only shown that he can play well in pass coverage by recording eight interceptions in his senior year, but he has great versatility and isn’t afraid to use his size and wingspan when tackling opponents. Coleman takes good angles in pursuit of the ball carrier and wraps them up promptly.

With Denver’s safety rotation looking fairly thin, Coleman has a great chance of making the roster. He and Trey Marshall should be the backup safeties to Simmons and Jackson. Vic Fangio does love himself some versatile defensive backs.
