Outlook for Gardner Minshew and Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020
Will Gruden’s west coast offense fit with Minshew’s skillset?
The Jaguars cut ties with John DeFilippo and added Jay Gruden on as their offensive coordinator. Former Giants head coach, Ben Mcadoo, will also be brought onto the staff as the quarterbacks coach. Gruden will bring a west coast scheme that flourished especially in Cincinnati with Andy Dalton and A.J. Green and at times in Washington with Kirk Cousins.
Without moving Fournette this summer, I expect Jacksonville to be a team that leans heavily on the run with Fournette in order to set up the play action. According to PFF, Minshew had the third highest passer rating in the league at 136.4 when using play action. Jacksonville does not have the talent that Gruden had in Cincy on the perimeter, so they are going to have to play more conservatively and rely on ball control.
With the inability to gain chemistry this offseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jaguars may experience a few roadblocks in the beginning of the season. According to footballoutsiders.com, the Jaguars ranked as the 8th youngest roster in the NFL last year. With twelve draft picks coming in, the team will be even younger this upcoming season. The terminology and chemistry needed to execute a west coast offense is extremely demanding and will be a huge question mark for the Jags and Minshew to answer in the beginning of the season.
