Reacting to ESPN’s NFL redraft: Why it’s ultimately flawed
What would happen if there was a draft with every NFL player?
On Monday morning, ESPN’s NFL Nation crew released a “Re-drafted” NFL. Every player is a free agent and available for draft selections. There were some obvious picks, such as Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes being the first overall pick. However, there were some selections that left modern football fans puzzled.
Unlike you would see in a Madden NFL draft, there were only four rounds. The goal was to win a Super Bowl within five years. The rules were that the teams must draft a quarterback, an offensive player who does not play quarterback, a defensive player and a final wild card pick.
ESPN was truly onto something great here and hopefully it becomes a fun topic in the sports world for a few days. The system that they used was rigid and restricting. Also, having the inside reporters for each of the team making the pics adds a touch of having the pick be tailored to scheme fit, which is a great factor.
The draft was done in the order of the 2020 NFL draft. However, all trades that were made essentially “did not happen”. That means that teams like the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans have their picks. It was also a snake draft, meaning that the Bengals would pick first in the odd numbered rounds, but last in the even numbered rounds.
