Out of the NFL at just 25 years old, Christian Hackenberg is making a comeback

There were once high hopes for the career of Christian Hackenberg after he committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions. While he never lived up to the hype at the collegiate level, he still heard his name called in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, as the New York Jets looked to untap his potential.

However, at just the age of 25, Hackenberg not only fell out of the NFL after just two and a half seasons and four teams later, but was also benched by the AAF’s Memphis Express in their short stint last year. He never saw an NFL start, was traded by the Jets just two seasons after they drafted him, was cut by the Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles, then released from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad all in a matter of six months.

Hackenberg, however, is not ready to throw in the towel just yet, as he is poised to make a comeback. Well, sort of.

More from New York Jets

After facing what he calls his “trials and tribulations in the NFL,” Hackenberg is now taking the same route Tim Tebow is on as he attempts to now become a Major League pitcher. In a segmented video of an interview set to release later this week, Hackenberg said:

"“I just want to compete man. I have kind of had my trials and tribulations with the NFL and had success and had that roller coaster ride. At the end of the day I am sitting here at 25, and for me, I feel like I have a lot left in the tank” (Hackenberg via NBC Sports)."

Never tallying a regular season start or appearance, Hackenberg flamed out of the NFL without ever attempting a pass. Known for his big arm coming out of Penn State, Hackenberg may have the talent to translate from under-center to the mound; it will be just a matter of time before we see how this pans out.
