What does Tua Tagovailoa bring to the Dolphins in 2020 and beyond?

Two months ago, the Miami Dolphins drafted Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He may have only been a Dolphin for two months at this point, but the wheels for this pick were in motion for over a year. Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross has been infatuated with Tua since early 2019. The reports were coming out as early as February of 2019.

Miami began to “Tank for Tua” last off-season, getting rid of key veterans all over the roster. However, the organization always maintained the stance that they would never intentionally throw a season away. They had limited capital and virtually no cap space because of dead money. The only players they brought in were Eric Rowe and Ryan Fitzpatrick. The team also traded for former top ten pick Josh Rosen, but that did not pan out.

The depleted roster even had some of the media’s “hot take specialists” taking shots at them on television. Surprisingly, the “Tank for Tua” campaign never came to fruition. After an embarrassing 0-7 start, the young players finally settled in and Miami started to win games. The Dolphins capped a 5-4 finish to the season with a 27-24 win on the road against Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots. All of this cemented the fact that Miami had found their coach of the future: Brian Flores.

Once the off-season started, it was time to cash in. However, Miami did not just throw money at anyone who wanted to play for them. They had a plan and they executed it. Miami brought in scheme fitting players with high character on team friendly deals. Even larger contracts given to Byron Jones and Kyle Van Noy are flexible and the Dolphins can get out of them. With the first of their three first round picks, they focused on the man they hope will lead their franchise to perennial success for the foreseeable future: Tua Tagovailoa.
