How does the signing of Cam Newton effect the 2021 draft plans of the Patriots?
Cam Newton is now a quarterback for the New England Patriots after they made a seismic move that figures to change their plans for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Whereas the Patriots could previously have been considered a potential destination for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2021 class if fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham struggled, the prospect of Newton winning the job and leading New England to a successful seasons means they could be able to focus on other positions next year.
With Newton at quarterback, the Patriots roster again looks like one that could go deep into the playoffs. Their excellent defense kept New England in the hunt despite Tom Brady’s struggles last season and has the talent to again lay the foundation for another Super Bowl push.
The primary issues are on Newton’s side of the ball, with the Patriots still lacking difference-makers at the offensive skill positions.
Wide receiver is an area the Patriots figure to be keen to address in 2021, while head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick may want to find replacements for several veterans who are entering the final years of their contracts.
Here we look at who the Patriots could select next year in a post-Newton signing mock draft.
