2021 NFL Draft: Devonta Smith needs to press his case for top-15
Verdict
Not reliant on physical traits to separate, Smith’s route-running ability and his reliability as a catcher of the football give him a high floor as a receiving prospect.
Teams should also be significantly encouraged by the upside he has demonstrated after the catch, which helped him average 18.5 yards per reception in 2019.
However, between a lack of true game-breaking speed and issues against physical coverage, Smith’s ceiling at the next level may be somewhat limited.
Smith was arguably the premier receiver on the Alabama team last year, having outperformed both Jeudy and Ruggs.
That kind of season would usually guarantee top-15 hype but that has not been the case for Smith, who may need to prove he can add more weight to his frame and succeed against press to be in the conversation for such a lofty draft position.
It is a difficult dilemma for Smith, the likes of Bateman and Moore arguably have lesser resumes and have opted not to play college football again. There is a strong case that Smith has done enough to come to the same decision but, if he can use the abbreviated 2020 season to refine an already well-rounded skill set, Smith could go into the 2021 draft confident of his status as a top-15 selection.
