2021 NFL Draft: Key prospects to watch in South Alabama vs. Southern Miss
By Cory Kinnan
Ky’el Hempy, S, Southern Miss
As the NFL continues to orient themselves more towards the aerial attack rather than the ground and pound “establish the run” style of football, safeties are becoming a high priority position to covet. Southern Miss has one with 2021 NFL Draft aspirations in the Senior defensive back Ky’El Hempy.
Hempy has displayed great ball production and a ton of solo tackles through his first two seasons with the Golden Eagles. He looks to cap off his collegiate career with an even bigger year as he hopes to see his draft stock soar like his school’s mascot. Over the past two years, Hempy has recorded eight interceptions, five passes defended, 96 solo tackles, and two tackles for loss.
A year ago, Hempy racked up nearly 60 solo tackles from the third level of the defense, adding two interceptions to his total as well. If the Golden Eagles’ safety can continue to increase his market share of tackles while adding to his ball production as well, then he could become a deep sleeper prospect with big time potential at the next level.
While the prospects are slim, there are some fun names to watch tonight. As football is back, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the fun.
