An intriguing Senior quarterback

Shane Buechele started his collegiate career at the University of Texas as a highly-ranked four-star recruit after high school. In fact, he was the “next star quarterback” for the Longhorns when he started 12 games as a true freshman. Then, Sam Ehlinger showed up in Austin, which relegated Buechele to a backup quarterback role. Buechele ended up transferring to SMU prior to the 2019 season after earning his degree from Texas in three years.

Buechele quickly acclimated himself to the spread, Air Raid offense the Mustangs run. In 2019, he threw for an impressive 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns with just 10 interceptions. He had a solid completion percentage of 62.7 percent and was a big reason for SMU’s 10-3 record.

Buechele projects as a prototypical, solid backup at the next level. He shows good accuracy to all levels of the field and generally makes good decisions with the football. However, Buechele possesses below-average arm strength to fit the ball into any tight windows or truly push the ball deep down the field. Buechele may not ever be a true starting quarterback in the NFL, but he can probably find a role as a solid backup much in the same way Chase Daniel has made a living in the league.
