Some surprising 2020 NFL Draft picks were let go on cut day

As we all know, this preseason looked much different from years past. With the cancellation of pro days, pre-draft visits, and summer programs becoming all virtual until fall camp, 2020 NFL Draft rookies were put at a major disadvantage from the start.

Accommodating to the potential of COVID outbreaks in season, the NFL decided to expand the practice squad to sixteen players, where six of those spots can go to veterans regardless of their experience and service time. As a result, this was the toughest year for any rookie to stick. Without any preseason games, other teams around the league do not have the ability to assess other teams talent.

Knowing this, we saw a number of draft picks that were waived on cut day knowing that other teams would not put a claim on them. The Minnesota Vikings cut a league-high four 2020 draft picks but all were retained on their practice squad.

Most of these draft picks signed to their respective teams’ practice squad, while others were picked up by another 53-man squad. However, this COVID-riddled preseason shows the lack of information these NFL teams had during the pre-draft process, as well as the obstacles these rookies have had to face this offseason.

Some of these teams felt that these late round picks were not ready for game action just yet and will need some extra development and practice work to help contribute at a later time. These are the draft picks that ultimately did not make their initial 53-man roster and were let go on cut-day:
