Austin Watkins, WR, UAB

Austin Watkins burst onto the scene in 2019 with the Blazers and totaled 57 receptions, 1,092 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. He averaged 19.2 yards a catch in 2019. It’s safe to say he’s a deep threat. Coming off a solid performance against Central Arkansas in which he had seven receptions and 72 receiving yards.

He averaged 10.3 yards per catch in week one. UAB will find ways to gain splash plays through Watkins. He has good ball skills and he’s not afraid to play above the rim and be physical at the catch point. He displays rather strong hands and consistently snags the football out of the air. He plays with a killer mentality and when the ball is thrown his way, he treats it as if he’s the only around trying to make a play on the football.

He’s route tree is solid but don’t confuse him for an elite separator. The Miami secondary will need to zero in on Watkins and limit the big plays. Listed at 6’3, 205 pounds, he’s a physical playmaker who consistently wins contested catch situations. Expect to see a few jump balls thrown his way against Miami. The Hurricanes will need to scheme for his big play ability.
