The Chicago Bears are turning to an undrafted rookie in desperate times

The start to the 2020 NFL season has been a brutal one as injuries have taken their toll early on. The Chicago Bears have not been immune to the injury bug, as they have lost their playmaker and running back Tarik Cohen for the season after he tore his ACL in Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons.

As they scramble to replace Cohen, the Bears have brought in undrafted free agent and rookie running back Artavis Pierce. He went through training camp with the Bears, standing out to the point where it looked like the Bears would be forced to carve out a role for him. Now he is back with the team and on the active roster, and given the health concerns and history of David Montgomery, may see some carries come his way sooner rather than later.

Looking at the running back position on Bears depth chart

Even after the injury to Cohen, Pierce is still listed as the third running back on the depth chart for the Bears. Montgomery will now more than likely be asked carry the workload. Behind Montgomery, however, is a former teammate of Pierce at Oregon State in Ryan Nall. He too was an undrafted free agent in 2018, and now he and Pierce will likely compete for the RB2 role.

We have already seen one undrafted free agent running back in James Robinson with the Jacksonville Jaguars make his stamp in the NFL. While Pierce will not see those same amount of opportunities with the Bears, he will have the chance to make an impression and prove he belongs at the NFL level.
