Rookie Film Review: Panthers Defensive Tackle Derrick Brown
By Seth Steere
Digging further into the film
“Here lies the Chargers left guard after what Derrick Brown just did to him on national television.”
In all seriousness, this was an extremely impressive rep by Brown and a terrible rep by the right guard. Brown, yet again, (we’re done mentioning it at this point, just know the man gets out of his stance) fires out of his stance and gives the linemen a little stutter step and when he reaches to get his hands on him, Brown just run rights by him to help make a play near the line of scrimmage.
A man that big should not be that agile, it’s truly quite remarkable.
In college, when opponents decided to pass, they often chose to double Brown because of what you just saw in the clip above. The man is just too good to not double. He was excellent with his hands and his leverage all game, consistently getting under his opponent’s frame. In this rep, he also displays his ability to counter and get off a block.
As he gets to the top of his rush, he sees the quarterback start to drift and he immediately moves tosses the center to the ground. Luckily for the offense, the ball was out of Herbert’s hands shortly after the massacre because Brown was coming.
A good start in the first half for the rookie, but how did he look in the second half?
