Question and answer with Miami Football kicker Andres Borregales
Q: What would you say is the hardest part of being a kicker?
A: “Dealing with adversity. People forget that kickers aren’t robots. Not everyone can be a kicker, you’ve got to be mentally strong. I learned to stay calm from my brother. He’s always giving me tips.”
Q: Like what?
A: “Like the goal to being a good kicker is finding what you did wrong and correcting it on the next kick. He always says: ‘One kick at a time.’ This helps me be calm and collected on the field. Before a big kick, I’m always really nervous on the sideline, but as soon as I step on the field, I forget everything, I’m numb. I’m cool, calm, collected, and ready to go.”
Q: How do you feel about icing the kicker?
A: “Honestly it’s an advantage. If I get to kick the ball, it’s a practice run. If not, I can still go through my motions and see how it feels.”
Q: Last question, do you have a hidden talent?
A: “Call of Duty: Search and Destroy. I played that 24 hours/day during quarantine.”
I really enjoyed sitting down with Andres for this. Not only did he give us a glimpse at himself as a person, but also a glimpse at kicker mentality. He clearly has a bright future and I look forward to that game-winning kick against Alabama next September.
