Draft Need #1: Cornerback

It’s not the most popular topic of conversation in Broncos Country, but the Broncos should be targeting one of the several talented cornerbacks in this 2021 NFL Draft class. The Broncos brought in former Pro Bowler A.J. Bouye via trade with the Jaguars and he has been on and off the field due to injuries this season.

His play has been acceptable when he’s on the field, but the Broncos could still use an upgrade at the position. Bryce Callahan has played like a top cornerback, but outside of that, the group has been inconsistent. Rookie cornerbacks Michael Ojemudia and Essang Bassey have been thrust into major roles and have played like…well, rookies.

With the need for better play out of his corners in 2021, Vic Fangio should look at targeting a cornerback early in the draft. With plenty of scheme fits available, especially early, the Broncos could land a top cornerback early in the draft and move on from Bouye, if they so choose.

While Bouye’s contract is affordable, he will be turning 30 in 2021, and with his inability to stay on the field for a full season, it would make sense to draft a young, talented cornerback on a rookie deal. The Broncos could be looking at adding a player like Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley, South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn, or Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II early.
