What does Jalen Hurts bring to the Philadelphia Eagles?

For the better part of the last month, Carson Wentz has been on the brink of losing his job as the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles. The team has suffered a cavalcade of injuries this season, and Wentz has been turning the ball over at an alarming rate. At 3-8-1, the Birds look dead in the water, even in the lowly NFC East.

During their most recent loss to the Green Bay Packers, head coach Doug Pederson pulled the plug on his quarterback. Rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts came into the game and the offense immediately improved. The spark that the offense needed was provided by their second round rookie. His energy seemed infectious and the team played some of their best football of the year.

The biggest thing that Hurts did was mitigate the eagles horrible offensive line. After losing essentially all their starters, the offensive line is one of the worst in the NFL. Wentz has mobility, but his pocket presence has come back down to Earth after his magical 2017 season. Hurts was able to scramble a little, and even tossed a beautiful touchdown on fourth down.

What questions does Hurts have to answer?

The biggest question that needs answering is, what does Hurts bring that Wentz does not? The biggest thing is just a different energy. The Eagles offense comes out of the locker room flat for every game. Many teams have that “new quarterback game”, where the offense gets an immediate spark from the arrival of a new starter. He is likely going to be more willing to take off than Wentz.

Hurts, with his legs, will pick up numerous first downs and keep the chains moving. He will probably protect the ball more as well. Even in college, Hurts was not one to turn the ball over. He will have a great first taste of starting NFL action when the New Orleans Saints come to town.
