Asante Samuel Jr. – Florida State

Yeah that’s right. Asante Samuel JUNIOR. Feel old? Us too.

Betting on NFL bloodlines can be a very astute move, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have proven with the selection of Antoine Winfield Jr, who has become an integral part of their defense after being selected in the second round this year.

Samuel has produced plenty to suggest that backing him to emulate his father and enjoy a stellar career in the pros is a smart play.

After an interception and 14 pass breakups in 2019, Samuel recorded three picks and six passes defensed in the eight games he played for Florida State in 2020 before opting out.

Standing at 5ft 10in and 184 pounds, Samuel does not have the typical frame that is seen as the archetype for San Francisco’s defense. However, what he does possess is patience and confidence in his extremely quick feet that allow him to efficiently mirror opposing wideouts.

It is that exceptional foot speed and quickness that gives Samuel the versatility to operate in the slot as well as on the outside.

Having another player who can operate at both spots may appeal greatly to San Francisco, particularly if the 49ers find re-signing Williams to be too pricey. In a year where every cap saving counts, the cheaper the cost in strengthening the secondary, the better.
