Round One: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

This pick should help dry the tears of Lions fans after their beloved Matthew Stafford inevitably leaves for an actually competent franchise.

Wilson is an electric product on the field and would be the perfect new face for any franchise looking to re-brand. His biggest “weakness” is strength of schedule since BYU is independent and plays few Power Five schools, if any. Their toughest opponent in 2020 was Coastal Carolina to whom they narrowly lost to earlier in December.

Zach has drawn comparisons to Joe Burrow in the sense that they both improved their play by an astonishing amount in one year. He has also drawn comparisons to Patrick Mahomes for his similar play style. While their play styles are definitely similar, it’s unfair to compare anyone to Patrick Mahomes. Personally, I see a lot of Kyler Murray in Zach Wilson.

Lately there have been quite a few people who prefer Wilson to Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields as the second best QB in this year’s draft class (behind Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence). For the sake of this mock draft, Fields was taken first. However, there’s a good chance that Zach Wilson is unavailable by the time the Lions are on the clock.
