Lions move on from Matthew Stafford in 7-round mock draft
Round Two: Alex Leatherwood, OOL, Alabama
No matter who the Lions hire to run their team, they will certainly agree that bolstering the offensive line is always a top priority. Detroit just paid their franchise left tackle Taylor Decker right before the season started, and have a star center in Frank Ragnow, but the rest of the line could use some upgrades.
Alabama offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood will be a steal no matter where he’s taken. A three year starter at Alabama, Leatherwood has played both guard and tackle, making him a highly desired prospect. Being that he is already a finely tuned player, he could come in and earn a starting spot at guard or right tackle for the Lions right away as a rookie.
Round Three: Jaylen Twyman, DT, Pittsburgh
Another position that every team could use more of. Build the trenches up and good things will come.
Defensive line is something the Lions have addressed heavily in the past few years but with very little to show for it. They traded for aging veteran Everson Griffen who doesn’t have much left in the tank. They drafted Julian Okwara in the 2020 NFL Draft to help come off the edge with his brother Romeo. They also gave huge money to Trey Flowers in free agency to be their star edge rusher, but he only has nine sacks in two seasons with the team.
On the interior of the defensive line, they’ve struggled to find a consistent replacement for Ndamukong Suh who they lost in free agency a few years back.
Pittsburgh defensive lineman Jaylen Twyman would be another steal for the Lions if he fell to round three for them. He has been an absolute force for the University of Pittsburgh and would be an immediate upgrade to Detroit’s defensive line.
