Option 4: Trade the 11th overall pick

This is the rarest option of all of the possible choices the Giants could make with their first pick. The benefit of having a pick just outside of the top ten is that some top ten talent usually pushes out of that range, giving the Giants a chance to secure someone near the top of their board. However, the disadvantage is having to potentially settle for that player. Say New York wants a receiver, but they are enamored with DeVonta Smith. If Smith is gone in the top ten, now the Giants have to settle for either Chase or Waddle. Here is where a trade can be ideal.

Trading up is not out of the question if general manager Dave Gettleman is in love with a prospect. But fans would no doubt prefer that the team trade back to obtain a haul of extra draft capital. Gaining draft capital is obviously a big move that could potentially fill more holes, and with a 6-10 roster that almost nabbed the division championship, there are plenty to fill that could get them over the hump.

Would Gettleman consider even moving back with, say, the Miami Dolphins, a team that has tons of draft capital to use in trades and would already have made the third overall selection to this point? Or could the Giants trade with their stadium companions the New York Jets, who also hold an extra first rounder and may want to move up to secure another premium player?

Since Gettleman is likely remaining as the Giants’ GM, it is not likely that a trade happens. His history shows that he frequently avoids trades and his last big move up the board was to select Deandre Baker, who is no longer on the team. But he is definitely on the hot seat, and making moves out of the ordinary may be what he needs to keep his job.
