The Dolphins may trade a former fifth overall pick for a superstar quarterback

Wild rumors are a name of the game for the NFL offseason, and a new juicy one is flying around the Miami Dolphins. A year after selecting Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dolphins are reportedly a destination for disgruntled superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson.

With a no-trade clause in his newly signed contract, Watson would reportedly be willing to waive it should the Houston Texans strike yet another deal with the Dolphins. As the Dolphins jumped the shark of their rebuild, there is reason to believe that general manager Chris Grier may gladly continue to expedite that rebuild by landing a proven commodity in Watson over attempting to develop a rookie quarterback like Tagovailoa.

What would the Dolphins have to give up?

More from Miami Dolphins

In addition to Tagovailoa, the Dolphins could expect to give Houston the picks they lost in the trade of Laremy Tunsil back. These picks would include the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the 35th overall pick. One could even infer that more would be required of Miami, potentially another first round pick, in order to land Watson.

This would be a win for the Texans as well, a team that lacked a first round and second round pick a year ago after trading for Tunsil. Should new general manager Nick Caserio pull off a trade of Watson with this haul, he could recoup a multitude of assets that former czar Bill O’Brien shipped off, and a future franchise quarterback in Tagovailoa.

If the Texans are genuinely going to trade Watson, an unhappy voice after the Texans have continued to cut corners on their hiring process, this would be a win-win for both teams. There is no way the Dolphins were going to roster as many rookies as they have picks this upcoming April, so trading Houston’s picks back to them, still retaining their own picks, and getting Watson would be home run for Miami.
