Lions: 3 options with 7th overall pick in 2021 NFL Draft
By Felix Davila
Option 4: Trade the 7th overall selection.
As with most teams in the top ten that have a host of holes, trading their first round pick for a haul of draft capital is an option that cannot be ignored. Instead of the hypothetical Stafford trade, this would be a move that could allow Stafford to retire a Detroit Lion while filling many of those needs. Considering their pick is inside the top ten, it would provide teams outside that range a perfect spot to grab either a quarterback falling down the board or any of the top talent at any position.
For example, if the New York Jets fall in love with Kyle Pitts but do not wish to select him second overall, then using their latter first rounder along with more capital could net them 7th overall. There’s a host of teams that may want to draft the tight end, or any of the top receivers on the board. And who is to say a team will not call Detroit about moving up for an offensive tackle?
Overall, trading the pick is a great option with quarterbacks pushing other talent down the board every year. With their new head coach and general manager incoming, this is a move that could not just inject the roster with young talent, but it would signal that a fire has been lit in the front office of Detroit.
