2021 NFL Draft Outlook

Given the traits and other intangibles, this writer considers Duke’s Victor Dimukeje to be a good Day Two option in the 2021 NFL Draft. His functional play strength, football IQ, prowess as a technician and solid pass rush plan are plus traits to have in a starting pass rusher. However, one should be mindful that his athletic short-comings and the need for more consistency in his rush counters is something that could hold him back.

As for how he fits onto an NFL roster, Dimukeje is a starting level edge defender teams can win with in spite of his shortcomings. He has the speed to play in a 3-4 base front where he is asked to rush from a two point stance. However, his best fit is in a base 4-3 scheme that can deploy him from wide alignments, in order to maximize his speed-to-power rush.

Joe Marino of The Draft Network offers his insight into the game of Dimukeje:

"“Quick, fluid get off. Hard charging pass rusher whose repertoire stems from his ability to convert speed to power… Smart processor against the run and he identifies blocking schemes quickly with correct responses. Hands are busy. Some really impressive reps where he stacks blocks, extends and disengages from a stand-up position. Experienced defender that has steadily improved throughout the course of this career. Plays with terrific urgency.”"

Dimukeje is a classic example of what you see is likely what you will get; or in football terms, he has a high floor and a low ceiling. While this can be a double edge sword, this writer believes that he can be a quality player at the next level. He may not be the next great sack master, but Dimukeje has the ability to stick around for a while at the next level.
