Panthers: Why Carolina must consider taking a QB in the 2021 NFL Draft
By Adam Burruss
Will the Panthers search for a successor?
As of right now, it seems recently-hired general manager Scott Fitterer is aggressively pursuing a new starting quarterback. They reportedly offered the eighth overall pick, Teddy Bridgewater and a fifth-round pick for Matthew Stafford. While they did not land Stafford, the message is clear that Carolina wants a new quarterback.
Whether they trade for someone or draft their future quarterback, the Panthers want a higher ceiling. This offseason is key to their rebuild, and they have tools to become a feared adversary in the NFL once more. Teddy Bridgewater is not the answer for the Panthers. It is a shame considering how much work he put into getting back to the NFL after his terrible knee injury. However, he is getting around $21 million a year to fill the Panthers’ void at quarterback.
His first season led to disappointment for both parties, but he proved he can be a viable starter in the NFL. A viable starter does not help the Panthers reach a Super Bowl. They need to invest in a quarterback who can raise the ceiling of their team.
The Teddy Bridgewater experiment looks to end for the Panthers, but they are in a perfect position to develop their next quarterback because of the Bridgewater signing. No matter how Carolina does it, the team is clearly looking to the future and trying to find its quarterback. That is the right decision and Carolina will not regret it.
