Cowboys: 3 free agents who could alter 2021 NFL Draft plans
Jonnu Smith, Tight End
While The Cowboys seem to want to stick with Blake Jarwin at the tight end position, saying he is better than Jonnu Smith might be a stretch. He faired quite well last year in Tennessee with 41 catches, 448 yards, and eight touchdowns. Smith also boasted a decent target to catch ratio as he had 65 targets and 41 catches. He is also a big target at 6-foot-3 and just shy of 250lbs.
He is one of the more athletic tight ends out there on the market and should come in at a far lower value than that of fellow tight end Hunter Henry.
If they do decide to keep Prescott in the fold giving him yet another weapon will make him happy and could open up more options on offense for their high-flying three-receiver set. I also like the fact that Smith has done a decent job in the run game considering there have been some OL issues the last two years, and they still have one of the best running backs in the league.
There is a lot to like about Smith in Dallas, with or without Prescott he offers another weapon. Some run blocking help, and a cheap player at a needed position.
This move could make 80 percent of the NFL super happy, as there is no way Dallas signs Smith then comes back with the 10th pick and takes the most athletic tight end in recent memory in Kyle Pitts, Florida. Who some have projected here at this spot, I think that’s a smart move to move away from Pitts for Dallas.
Signing Smith may also allow the Cowboys to think they helped the run game enough to go back and check in on defenders here at 10. It would also mean that Dallas would no longer need to take a tight end at any point this draft having Jarwin and Smith.
