Washington Football Team: 3 free agents who could alter 2021 NFL Draft plans

The case for a former star quarterback
The current version of Cam Newton is not prime Cam Newton. At 32 years old, the former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback finished with the worst year of his career, and it seems he will not be expensive or heavily desired. He finished 30th in QBR and led New England to their first losing season in decades. However, that does not mean he lacks upside or that he is incapable of being a good quarterback.
The Washington Football Team lacks a true quarterback right now, and they are not in a great position to draft one. Right now, the only rostered quarterbacks are Alex Smith and Taylor Heinicke. The team extended quarterback Taylor Heinicke after his impressive playoff performance against the Buccaneers, but he does not appear to be the Football Team’s long-term answer at quarterback.
Cam Newton does not exactly change the draft plans for the Football Team. He is expected to sign a cheap deal once again. However, he has history with head coach Ron Rivera and provides mobility. If the Football Teams wants to compete, it seems as if Newton is the best stopgap option for them. At worst, he fills the quarterback role for a bit and maybe mentors whoever the Football Team want to be the starter. At best, he can be the answer.
Right now, Newton’s upside is his mobility versus his passing. This is fairly important for the Washington offense. Washington mainly played quarterbacks Dwayne Haskins and Alex Smith, who both struggled to extend plays with their limited mobility. Newton still has his athleticism, and that is a stark contrast from last season, even if his passing does mirror the efficiency of Alex Smith.
This signing should not affect the Football Team’s draft plans. However, signing Cam Newton gives the team some flexibility and upside. In order to succeed, the Football Team’s offense needs upside.
