Mid-round Target: Shi Smith, South Carolina
After spending four seasons at South Carolina with the inconsistent quarterback play, Shi Smith is finally going pro. Even with up and down QB play, Smith still showed a ton of potential to be a contributor at the next level and was one of the few consistent pieces in the SC offense. Smith left South Carolina with 2,204 yards and 13 touchdowns on 174 catches while also adding an additional 21 kick returns for 448 yards.
Shi Smith checks in at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds and primarily played out of the slot in South Carolina. Smith uses his speed and acceleration to separate from defenders in open space and that quick burst of speed is what will make him money at the next level. Smith also is not afraid of taking some contact and does a great job of fighting at the point of attack to come down with the ball as best as he can for a man of his stature.
The issue with Smith-like most slot guys coming out of college is that he needs to add good weight. The NFL is faster, stronger, and tougher than NCAA ball and your body needs to be able to accommodate that. Adding functional/good weight will be huge in Smith’s development. Shi Smith has tons of potential but is not as polished and day one ready as some others in the draft. While he might not start on day one though there is a ton of upside.
