3. Alex Leatherwood, Alabama

Alex Leatherwood has been one of the consistent names in all of college football during his time with the Alabama program. A three-year starter, Leatherwood has spent time playing both guard and tackle and shows that flexibility to play either position entering the NFL.

During his career, he was a solid starter for the team but really failed to kick his draft stock up from where it has been over the past few years. He is good across the board but really lacks some of the elite traits that raise tackles stocks, and some of the inconsistencies he has have prevented him from taking the jump many have hoped for.

Leatherwood has exceptional length that causes many problems for defenders in both the run and pass game. His lower body mechanics are effective and he does well to keep his frame clean and work counters as a pass protector. However, Leatherwood lacks the elite power you look for and as such really fails to drive defenders off the line or out of plays. He can hold his own here but that’s about all. He shows some inconsistencies with his balance and struggles with the recovery athleticism to hold his own versus speed rushers on the edge. He is late shooting his hands and often will reach for defenders as such, despite his plus length at his disposal.

Overall, Leatherwood is a solid prospect that lacks any of the elite traits to set him apart from the rest of the class. He showed good starter upside and is often one of the top tackles on the board around the Chiefs picks in most mock drafts. There are talks of moving him inside, which he could be successful at as long as his strength improves, though he has the tools to be effective at either spot. Development will be needed before you see a high-level contributor for your offensive line though.
