Potential day-one (trade back) option: Jaelan Phillips, Miami

As stated earlier, there is no top-10 talent in this edge class, so this pick would be made after a presumed trade down. With that said, Jaelan Phillips is the only edge rusher worthy of a top-15 selection. Phillips is quick off the ball, has multiple pass rush moves and counters, and has the flexibility needed to corner into the pocket.

A former five-star recruit, Phillips originally committed to UCLA before having to retire as a freshman because of concussions. After time off, he announced he would be returning to football and transferring to Miami. The Hurricanes came into the year with Gregory Rousseau, Quincy Roche, and Jaelen Phillips at the edge rusher position, three guys who are going to be playing on Sundays. After Rousseau opted out, Phillips stepped in and worked his way into the first round conversation.

If there is a player who can immediately replace the production of Carl Lawson, it’s Jaelen Phillips. He is the most developed pass rusher in the class and can be a day one starter on any team in the NFL. He can rush from a three-point or two-point stance and has the strength and quickness to compete with NFL offensive tackles on a weekly basis. If you are a Bengals fan and want an edge rusher in round one, you should be hoping for a trade down and then Jaelan Phillips.
