Round 2 option: Trevon Moehrig, TCU

This year’s NFL Draft does not have a lot of star-studded defensive talent at the top, and the safety position is no different. Currently, it seems that one safety has a shot at going round one, and that is TCU’s Trevon Moehrig. However, there is no guarantee he is a first round selection, and on the basis, he falls out of the first round the Falcons are in the perfect position to select him with their second round pick at 35th overall.

Moehrig has been a crucial player for the Horned Frogs defense for years now. He played a variety of roles for the team but his best implementation will likely be as a single high safety that is asked to patrol the middle of the field at the next level. Moehriq has great instincts and often stays one step ahead of everyone else by keying in on quarterbacks and showing good anticipatory skills.

He also has fantastic ball skills that really popped on film, as he showed great ability to generate turnovers or disrupt passes late. He is great in zone coverage but will need to learn more discipline as a man coverage defender, though from a fluidity and anticipation standpoint he is impressive.

Overall, Moehrig has all the makings of a starting free safety at the next level, just will need to continue to refine his game a bit further.
