Accuracy to all levels

The Patriots largely spent big on offensive weapons, a splurge motivated by a dismal campaign on that side of the ball during which New England’s lack of skill-position talent was all too apparent.

Some of the contracts handed out may have been a little rich, but there is no doubt Fields can mesh well with the weapons they have brought in due to his accuracy in throwing to all levels of the field.

The anticipation with which he delivers throws over the middle of the field would help Fields build a rapport with Kendrick Bourne, who demonstrated a great talent for creating separation on intermediate routes during his time with the San Francisco 49ers.

Fields’ prowess as an over-the-middle thrower could also be a significant aid to his chemistry with tight ends Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, who would also be in a position to benefit from his ability to rip the ball down the seam, which was a key feature of Ohio State’s demolition of Clemson in their last meeting.

The $11million a year deal handed to Nelson Agholor may look a dubious one, but Fields’ remarkable deep-ball accuracy can ensure the Patriots make the most of the former Las Vegas Raider’s downfield speed.

New England’s busy free agency has the roster in much better shape, even if that improvement came at a high price. Yet the lack of a long-term solution at quarterback remains a significant problem, one that may force Belichick into a similar show of aggressiveness in the draft. If that proves to be the case and the Patriots attempt to make a move up the board, there is plenty of evidence to suggest Fields should be the target.
