49ers: 3 prospects to run and never look back from in 2021 NFL Draft
By Cory Kinnan
2. Jayson Oweh, EDGE, Penn State
It was less than two years ago that the Niners were competing for a Super Bowl title, and then it all came crashing down due to injuries and negative quarterback play. One could assume that if Shanahan gets his quarterback of the future and the likes of Nick Bosa return to full health, then they could once again get back in the mix for a Super Bowl run.
This means they do not have time to take a chance on an extremely raw player with tremendous upside. Yes, Penn State pass rusher Jayson Oweh is one of the most athletic players in the entire class, and yes the Niners have a need coming up off the edge due to the shortcomings of Dee Ford. However, if the Niners are going to take a dude who they will need to have a significant impact right off the bat, Oweh isn’t their guy.
Oweh will be in need of significant coaching, and may not be ready for a big role on a team in at least a year or two. Does he justify a top-50 pick? Sure, for some teams who can give him the time to develop and who can bank on his tremendous upside to become a top-notch pass rusher. That team, however, is not the Niners.
