Giants: 3 prospects for Dave Gettleman to avoid in 2021 NFL Draft
By Cory Kinnan
3. Deonte Brown, G, Alabama
After parting ways with former Pro Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler, the Giants are now back in the market for another offensive guard as well. While it will not be a day-one investment for Gettleman and his team, the Giants will look to address the position on Friday or beyond in the 2021 NFL Draft.
As they are searching for a new guard, however, they must fall into the classic “he is just a football player” fall back and into Deonte Brown. The Alabama guard remains one of the most overrated players in the draft class, as he cannot get to the boundary or up to the second level. In fact, Alabama has had to scheme around him in order to keep him in the phone booth or pull him deep towards the edge in order for him to beat pass rushers to the spot.
Brown came into the Senior Bowl overweight at 360 pounds, and it showed at the event. He was getting turned around, with no athletic ceiling to compensate for his woes. He lost nearly 20 pounds for his pro day, but even then, Brown tested as an extremely poor athlete, testing below the 15th percentile historically for the guard position with a Relative Athletic Score of 1.47.
When looking for a guard, the Giants would have much better lucking taking a look at interior offensive linemen with athletic upside and who show the ability to climb and move on film. Looking towards Illinois’ Kendrick Green or Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Quinn Meinerz would be better options.
