The Carolina Panthers head into the 2021 NFL Draft already made a move at the quarterback position that could significantly alter their plans with the eighth overall pick in the first round. It was not the move most expected them to make this offseason. Consistently linked with a trade for Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans quarterback’s legal troubles may have played a significant role in the Panthers instead deciding to strike a deal with the New York Jets for Sam Darnold instead.

The Panthers traded a 2021 sixth-round pick and a second-rounder and a fourth-round choice in 2022 to take on the significant task of attempting to revitalize Darnold’s career after he failed to live up to his draft status as the third overall pick in 2018.

What are next steps for Panthers?

It may be seen as an underwhelming move by a team that looks primed to take the next step in their rebuild following a promising first season under Matt Rhule. But it does give them the chance to eschew one of the top five quarterbacks in the draft class and instead select a premium talent at another area of need.

After the Panthers spent every pick of their 2020 draft on defense, it stands to reason they will look to focus on the offense in their first draft with new general manager Scott Fitterer pulling the strings. Who could be in the mix for Carolina following the acquisition of Darnold? Here we look at three options for the Panthers with the eighth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
