Lions 2021 NFL Draft primer: Can Jared Goff keep job long-term?
Top Targets for Lions
Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama
Any of the top three receivers falling to the seventh pick would be a dream for the Lions. Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle is regarded as the best receiver in the class by many. His next-level speed and versatility make him a matchup nightmare for defenses. In the SEC, opposing defenses paid extra attention to Waddle, opening up big plays for his teammates.
Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama
Keeping things consistent with another member of the Crimson Tide, Patrick Surtain II is the perfect fit to play across from Okudah. The 6-2, 208 pound cornerback impressed at his pro day and is perhaps the best man cover corner in this class. Obviously, the Lions took Okudah in the top three last year. However, if the Lions decide “that wasn’t us” and decide to take the top player on their board, Surtain II should absolutely be an option.
The
Rashawn Slater, OT, Northwestern
The Lions offensive line truly doesn’t look terrible right now. Jackson and Fran Ragnow look like impressive young players. However, if they truly want to evaluate Jared Goff (or start building up the foundation for the 2022 quarterback draft pick), they should maybe look to add Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater to play offensive tackle.
Detroit has Tyrell Crosby and Halapoulivaati Vaitai already on the roster, but neither have separated themselves as of now. Detroit can cut Vaitai next year and Crosby is a free agent. Slater could play guard as a rookie and then transition to be the franchise right tackle in 2022.
