Broncos 2021 NFL Draft primer: Will George Paton replace Drew Lock?
Who are three players the Denver Broncos should target in the 2021 NFL Draft?
Denver and George Paton have been preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft and have been doing their due diligence on each of the top prospects in this class. With the draft just days away, here are three players the Denver Broncos should target in the 2021 NFL Draft.
1. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
As stated, the quarterback position in Denver is not set in stone. The team might like Drew Lock enough not to move on from him at the moment, but if there is a chance to upgrade the position, Paton won’t hesitate to take that chance. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields has all the tools to be the Broncos franchise signal-caller. With great athleticism, toughness, and physical talents, Fields could very well win a camp competition with Lock and become the Denver Broncos’ next starting quarterback.
2. Greg Newsome II, CB, Northwestern
The Denver Broncos will be looking to add to their secondary through the NFL Draft, even though they signed two of the top cornerbacks in the free-agent class. Northwestern’s cornerback Greg Newsome II is an excellent scheme fit for Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme and can add to the Broncos’ depth at the position. His physicality, ball skills, and speed are all necessary in the AFC West, which features some of the best receivers in the conference. If the Broncos can, Newsome may be a target for them early in Day 2 or in a trade down scenario in Day 1.
3. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame
With Fangio and Paton looking to build the defense, linebacker is going to be a position that they target either in Day 1 or early in Day 2. In 2020, the team tried to trade back up into the first round to select LSU’s Patrick Queen. In 2021, the team could trade down with a team looking to move up and get one of the top linebackers in the class. Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is the type of hybrid linebacker that would fit well in Fangio’s system next to Alexander Johnson. His length and athleticism, as well as his versatility, could help Denver solve their questions on defense in 2021.
